What this material is

How to render polished concrete

Polished concrete is the workhorse floor of contemporary architecture — modernist residential, industrial conversions, lofts, galleries, restaurants. It reads as durable and honest, fills large floor areas without visual noise, and works under almost any lighting condition. As a material it's mechanically ground and progressively polished until the surface reflects light softly without becoming mirror-glossy.

For AI rendering, the most common error is pushing the surface too reflective. Real polished concrete reflects about 30-50% of incident light, not 100% — you should see soft glow under a window, not a mirror-image of the room. In prompts, the phrase 'softly reflective' or 'low-sheen polished concrete' works better than 'shiny' or 'glossy'.

The second detail to control is aggregate visibility. Polished concrete in real installations shows tiny chips of sand and small stone through the surface — they're what give the floor its texture and depth at floor level. The prompt phrase 'subtle aggregate' captures this without going overboard; 'exposed aggregate' produces a different finish entirely that looks heavier and more industrial.

Color runs from very pale gray (close to white in interior settings) through mid-tone to charcoal. Board-formed concrete is a variant where the surface shows the grain of the wood forms used to pour it; specify 'board-formed' explicitly for that look. Pairs strongly with steel, glass, leather, and warm woods to balance the cool tone.

Frequently Asked
Questions

How reflective should polished concrete look?

Softly — about a 30-50% reflection. You should see a glow of the window or lamp on the floor, not a clear mirror image of the room. Specify 'low sheen' or 'softly reflective' in the prompt. 'Glossy' or 'mirror-polished' pushes too far and reads as commercial or wet-look.

What's the difference between polished and board-formed concrete?

Polished is mechanically ground smooth, often used as a finished floor. Board-formed shows the wood-grain pattern from the timber forms used to pour the concrete, typically on walls or columns. Specify 'board-formed' explicitly when you want that ridged texture — otherwise the AI will default to smooth.

How do I keep polished concrete from looking cold?

Pair it with warm materials in the same view — leather furniture, walnut or oak accents, brass or copper hardware, a wool rug. Polished concrete is cool by nature; warmth has to come from the objects on top of it. The lighting also matters: golden hour or late afternoon makes concrete read warmer than overcast.
